Dog Welfare & Ethics Statement V1.0

Our Commitment to Canine Welfare & Ethical Practices

At Dog First Aid Australia, we are dedicated to promoting the highest standards of canine welfare and ethical first-aid practices. Our mission is to ensure that all dogs receive the care, respect, and emergency support they need while educating owners, trainers, and pet professionals on responsible and humane first-aid techniques.

🐾 Our Ethical Principles

1. Humane & Ethical First Aid Practices

• We advocate for humane handling of dogs in all emergency situations.

• First aid should be administered in a calm and reassuring manner, prioritizing the dog's physical and emotional well-being.

2. Dog-First Approach in Emergency Care

• The welfare of the dog always comes first in anythe first aid or emergency situation.

• We encourage stress-minimizing techniques when providing first aid, such as gentle handling and desensitization strategies.

• All our training materials are designed to empower owners and professionals to provide emergency care that aligns with best-practice veterinary guidelines.

3. Alignment with Animal Welfare Laws & Veterinary Standards

• Our courses and materials follow Australian animal welfare legislation, including:

• The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (various state regulations across Australia).

• Guidelines set by the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA).

• Nationally recognized animal first aid competencies (e.g., ACMGAS206 - Provide Basic First Aid for Animals).

• We work closely with certified veterinarians and animal care professionals to ensure our teachings are scientifically accurate, up-to-date, and ethically responsible.

4. Responsible First Aid & Veterinary Referral

• First aid is not a replacement for veterinary care. It is a temporary measure to stabilize a dog before professional treatment.

• We train our students to recognize when a dog requires immediate veterinary attention and to act accordingly.

• Our courses emphasize safe transportation methods for injured dogs to minimize further harm while seeking veterinary assistance.

5. Respect for Canine Individuality & Needs

• Every dog is unique, and our approach to first aid acknowledges differences in breed, size, temperament, and medical history.

• We encourage dog owners and professionals to observe, listen, and respect a dog’s body language when administering first aid.

• Handling techniques should be adjusted based on the situation to reduce stress and promote cooperation in an emergency.

6. Education & Advocacy for Canine Welfare

• We are committed to educating the community on responsible dog ownership, injury prevention, and ethical first aid practices.

• Our training materials are designed to empower dog owners and professionals with knowledge that improves canine health and well-being.

• We advocate for continuous learning and skill development in canine first aid and emergency response.

Our Pledge to You & Your Dog

At Dog First Aid Australia, we pledge to:

✔️ Promote ethical, science-based first aid techniques that prioritize canine welfare.

✔️ Educate without fear-mongering, ensuring that first aid remains a practical and compassionate skill.

✔️ Continuously update our training materials based on the latest veterinary research and animal welfare advancements.

✔️ Support responsible pet ownership through education, advocacy, and best-practice emergency response methods.

🐶 A healthier, safer world for dogs starts with informed and compassionate humans. Thank you for being part of the movement to improve canine first aid and welfare. 🐾

Customer Care & Child Safety Policy V1.0

💬 Our Commitment

At Dog First Aid Australia, we are deeply committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all participants, including children and young people. This policy outlines our approach to customer care and child safety, based on the 10 Child Safe Standards, the Universal Principle and principles of cultural safety.

🤝 Customer Care Values

  • Respect: Every individual is treated with dignity, regardless of age, background, culture, gender, or ability.
  • Transparency: We communicate clearly, honestly, and openly with our customers.
  • Responsiveness: We listen and act promptly to resolve concerns and feedback.
  • Safety: Physical and psychological safety is our foundation—for humans and hounds.

🧒 Child Safety Policy Framework

We uphold the 10 Child Safe Standards as mandated by the Queensland Child Safe Organisations Act 2024:

1. Child Safety Embedded in Leadership, Governance & Culture

We ensure our leaders champion child safety by embedding it into our policies, code of conduct, risk assessments, and daily operations.

2. Children Participate in Decisions

We empower children and young people to express their views, ask questions, and be involved in shaping how we deliver child-inclusive programs.

3. Families & Communities Involved

We actively communicate with families, respect their insights, and work in partnership to support child safety and wellbeing.

4. Respect for Diversity & Equity

We provide culturally safe, inclusive services that respect the unique needs of every child, especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

5. Recruiting Staff & Volunteers Suitably

All team members undergo Working With Children Checks (Blue Card), reference checks, and are trained in child-safe practices.

6. Staff Training & Support

All staff are trained in the 10 Child Safe Standards, first aid, and trauma-informed care. Ongoing learning is expected and supported.

7. Child-Friendly Complaint Processes

We provide clear, confidential pathways for children and families to make complaints or raise concerns—with no risk of retribution.

8. Safe Physical & Online Environments

We ensure that all spaces (including online learning portals) are secure, age-appropriate, and free from harmful materials or interactions.

9. Continuous Improvement

We regularly review our practices using incident reports, student feedback, and policy updates to ensure continual alignment with best practices.

10. Documented Policies & Procedures

All child safety procedures are clearly written, accessible, and reviewed annually.

🧭 The Universal Principle:

We are committed to upholding the cultural rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, including their right to connection with culture, community, and Country. This includes:

  • Recognising the unique strength of First Nations peoples.
  • Providing culturally appropriate care, staff training, and visual representation.
  • Consulting with Indigenous community members where relevant.

🔒 Confidentiality & Reporting

All concerns about child safety or wellbeing are taken seriously. If an allegation or incident is reported, it will be:

  • Responded to immediately,
  • Escalated through our Reportable Conduct System,
  • And managed in accordance with Queensland legislation and our internal procedures.

Caring for dogs is what we do—but caring for people is who we are. At Dog First Aid Australia, every child’s voice matters, every culture is respected, and every tail wag happens in a space of safety, trust, and love.

Assistance Dogs V2.0

We kindly ask, as a courtesy, that if you are bringing your Assistance dog, you let us know. Particularly if you have any special requests, e.g., seating, etc, this is to ensure we can make reasonable adjustments to our training, operations, classroom, etc., to accommodate your request. Requests on the day may not be achievable. If this is the case, we will reschedule you to another date, but we will do everything we can to avoid this.

This is also a perfect time, again as a courtsey,  to let us know that if you have a medical support dog, what to do if you have an episode. For example, what to do for your condition, assistance with medication, call an ambulance, etc. Only the trainer will be told this information to protect your privacy and dignity. This will help us to provide the best care possible.

If you have a request for the venue, we encourage you to contact them directly with your request. All our venues can be found within each state's directory on our website.

The above is a courtesy, NOT A REQUIREMENT to attend class.

Please note: No first aid training can be conducted on your Assistance dog - If they are there to work, then they are there to work. No exceptions. No other dogs will be in class (except assistance dogs), as we use manikins for training.

You must at all times have the animal under effective control.

You may be requested by us or the venue for evidence that it is an assistance animal and that it is trained to appropriate hygiene/behaviour standards; if that evidence is not produced, you may be refused entry into the classroom/venue.
